Ravi Kumar Welcome to the latest REEDS NEWS. As the festive season actualize, I am sure you all have had enliven festivity – Ganesh Chaturdi, Dussehra; Diwali and Bakriid. A bit belated, please do accept my best wishes on these occasions, nonetheless.

2nd October 2012 - a day to accolade and bethink Mahatma Gandhi on his 143 birth anniversary and so the 108th birth anniversary of another stimulated leader, former Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. I join with you in paying tributes to both of them.

Now, a bit of update on SKILLS2013 International Conference:

As has been informed in the earlier communication REEDS is hosting the Second International Conference on 'Life Skills and Livelihood skills – Challenges for International cooperation' - SKILLS2013 in February 2013 at Hyderabad, India. The three day event is aimed to serve as a platform for international dialogue, exchange of ideas and establish fruitful collaborations in skills and education.

Until now, over a dozen of institutions – national and international, of repute extended their support to the event. Ministry of Labor and Employment; Government of India and Department of Employment & Training; Government of Andhra Pradesh are associated with the conference. Eminent national and international experts from over 11 countries have confirmed their participation at this event.

Hon'ble Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and Hon’ble Minister of Labour & Employment, Government of Andhra Pradesh have agreed to address the Conference and we await their formal consents.

The process of finalizing the Thematic Sessions and program has been initiated under the stewardship of Prof. R Sadanada in association with Dr. SK Hajela, my fellow Steering Committee Members. The call for papers has been made. Proposals are invited for workshops. You may have a look at conference website www.skills2013.org on the conference preparations and progress.

We are confident at REEDS, with your support the conference would gain more prominence in the coming days and certainly be a path breaking event!

2013 World Development Report on Jobs assess that against 3 billion people having jobs worldwide, some 1.65 billion have regular wages or salaries and the rest work in farming, small and household enterprises, or in casual or seasonal day labor. This brings out the importance of short duration skills training to a large number of youth enabling them to get an access to skill-based employment. Many of these jobs can also be transformed into self employment. It is our desire that SKILLS2013 will address the issue of fostering skills development among rural and unorganized sections of the society for economic and social prosperity, the design and delivery thereof that enable them to respond successfully to the challenges they face.

With best regards,

Ravi K Reddy
