Welcome to latest REEDS update

Ravi Kumar Towards a bigger role : For the past couple of months, we are a bit busy at REEDS in documenting our last year activities and attending few field activities. We were also trying to reflect on what we have done in the past and how we can do things differently in the future in promoting the quality of life of rural communities.

This introspection revel the need to have a new strategy to match our aspiration to be an institution playing a bigger role in addressing the challenges of today’s and future Rural India. We, in consultation with our diverse stakeholders, would be soon unraveling our new roadmap of the future with clear articulation of the focus so that our goals become a reality. Our Annual General Meeting is scheduled on June 29, 2013 and we would be happy to share our Annual Report with you immediately thereafter.

Wealth out of waste: We are happy for able to get an opening to realize one of our reflective which we have been pursuing tirelessly for over a year by now. In April, we were assigned with 10 villages in a District of Andhra Pradesh to develop a comprehensive Solid and Liquid Waste Management project covering the entire community for saturated outcomes. This initiative aims at encouraging community participation in unleashing the economic potential of waste management towards empowering their livelihoods and environment. The project has just begun.

Monitoring Development Programs: We conducted monitoring of Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India 10 major development programs including the flagship Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme – MGNREGS at 40 villages spread across four districts at Karnataka last month. This third party monitoring is aimed to ensure improved service delivery, transparency and accountability in the implementation of the programs.

As a National Level Monitoring Agency for Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, this is our third consecutive assignment in the past 12 months. We are immensely happy for being part of the Ministry mission – 'sustainable and inclusive growth of rural India'.

SKILLS2013 Conference You may recall that we had scheduled the event for February 2013. The President of India, Sri Pranab Mukherjee had shown interest in our conference and had consented to deliver the inaugural address. Since then we are in search for a time slot for the President to deliver the address. Given his busy schedule this effort continues to be hard. However, these on their own form a great recognition of the themes of our conference and form great source of encouragement. We are grateful to the President.

Meanwhile, taking into consideration various suggestions from several members of the Advisory Committee and other stakeholders on the need to maintain continuity in our endeavors we are considering to take the conference forward. The steering committee would soon announce the decision. We count on your support for the event.

Mr.Rao Another affliction: While we are yet to recover from the loss of Prof. PV Indiresan’s demise in February, there was another affliction in the form of untimely death of our Advisor Mr. Rama Mohan Rao Neelagiri. Rama Mohan joined us in September 2011 immediately after retirement as Chief Engineer, Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Department, Government of Andhra Pradesh. He has been advising us on evolving models to provide knowledge and support in the areas of Safe Drinking Water, Sanitation and Solid and Liquid Waste Management. He died on 9 May 2013 after a brief illness of neurological disorder. We greatly miss Mr. Rao

Thank you for the continued support that always gives us a reason to believe that envisioned change in Rural Development is possible.

With best regards,

Ravi K Reddy
