Safe Water and Better Hygiene for School Children – A Path to Healthy Mind

Access to safe drinking water, proper sanitation and hygiene is a fundamental necessity, yet millions of people around the world, especially in slums and rural areas are deprived of these basic facilities. Children in these communities are particularly vulnerable, facing health risks that impact their well-being and education.

Recognizing this urgent need, REEDS, an NGO dedicated to rural livelihood development since 1989, initiated a program to enhance WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) infrastructure in schools. This initiative aligns with the Government of Telangana’s mission to expand WASH facilities across all government and local body schools in the state. By conducting thorough physical assessments and engaging with students, faculty, and stakeholders, REEDS identifies gaps not covered by government support and works to bridge them effectively.

STRENGTHENING SCHOOL INFRASTRUCTURE FOR BETTER LEARNING

As part of this initiative, REEDS also provides essential teaching and learning materials along with other infrastructure improvements not covered under Government of India scheme to create a more conducive learning environment for children. Some key support areas include: play equipment to encourage physical activity and engagement, classroom equipment to enhance the learning experience, water purification unit (RO) for access to safe drinking water and a Secured storage facilities for important school records

WASH AWARENESS THROUGH ENGAGEMENT AND ACTIVITIES

This initiative was first implemented in two schools, Narsapur and Bandamailaram in Siddipet district of Telangana to promote hand hygiene awareness, REEDS organized a 76th Republic Day celebration of India with a painting competition under the theme “Clean Hands are Safe Hands.”. The event commenced with an interactive WASH awareness session, where children learned about the 10-second handwashing technique and the importance of personal hygiene. Students were then encouraged to express their understanding through art, creating drawings on hygiene and cleanliness. The best artworks were recognized and awarded certificates and prize money, motivating children to adopt healthy hygiene habits

THE ROAD AHEAD: EXPANDING THE INITIATIVE

Alongside awareness campaigns, REEDS also conducted WASH assessments to understand schools’ specific needs and address infrastructure gaps not covered by government programs. By replicating this successful model in more schools, we can:

• Prevent illnesses among children by promoting better hygiene practices
• Enhance learning environments through improved infrastructure
• Contribute to a healthier future generation

The future of our country lies in the hands of its children. Ensuring their health and well-being today means securing a stronger and more prosperous tomorrow. Through collective efforts and community support, we can create safer, healthier, and more nurturing learning spaces for every child.

Join us in making a difference—because every child deserves a clean and safe environment to grow and thrive!
