Women Village, Matholi – The New Face of Agro-Tourism in Uttarakhand
At REEDS, I’ve learned how compassion, curiosity, and spotting opportunities drive meaningful rural change, especially for women. On a recent visit to my hometown in Uttarakhand, I came across an inspiring example: a confident, women-led collective running a thriving ecotourism enterprise in Buari Gaon Known as “Women Village,” it’s a shining example of sustainable tourism and grassroots empowerment. I’m excited to share my firsthand experience of this remarkable model of courage, collaboration, and innovation transforming rural futures.
Nestled in the serene Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, Matholi village- is emerging as a beacon of sustainable rural tourism and women empowerment. Surrounded by majestic mountains, meadows, and streams, this hidden gem offers more than just scenic beauty—it’s a living example of how tourism can transform lives.
At the heart of this transformation are the women of Matholi, who manage homestays, lead treks, cook traditional meals, and welcome guests with unmatched warmth. Their efforts are not only enhancing tourism but also generating livelihoods and reviving the rural economy.
Must-Do Experiences in Matholi:
- Kandak Trek: A scenic trail through lush forests and meadows.
- Jagdehi Trek: A spiritual hike to the highest village peak.
- Grass-Cutting Competition: Held on International Women’s Day, celebrating the strength of local women.
- Farm Experiences: Join in traditional farming and taste fresh, home-cooked meals.
- Moonlight Trek: A magical 1.5 km night walk under the stars.
- Day Trip to Uttarkashi: Visit iconic spots like the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering and Ganga Bridge.

A Community-Led Story of Change
The village’s journey began when Pradeep Panwar, a local youth, returned during the COVID-19 lockdown and turned his Chhani (traditional cowshed) into a homestay. He trained local women in hospitality and village tours, creating employment and empowering others like Anita Panwar to join in. Since 2022, over 1,000 tourists have visited, creating livelihoods for more than 20 women in the village.
“Matholi is a shining example of rural tourism and women empowerment,”
says Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, encouraging others to take inspiration.
Why It Matters
Women Village is more than a destination—it’s a model for sustainable tourism, livelihood generation and reverse migration. It showcases how rural communities can thrive when women lead and locals invest in their heritage. Come for the views, stay for the spirit. Matholi is waiting.
